The earth is closest to the sun in January. If that's the case why is it so cold at the beginning of the year? It's all about the axis. The angle of the earth's axis means that the northern hemishphere receives less of the earth's energy in January, making it the coldest month in that part of our planet. Solar Power increasing

The UK government is aiming for 4 million homes to be powered by the sun through solar panels by the year 2020. This is part of a EU agreement for 15% of electricity to be generated by renewable sources like solar power. At the end of 2011 there were 230,000 solar panel projects in the Uk and by the end of February 2012 1,000 MW of electricity was being generated by solar panels. Solar power is on the increase in the UK and will continue to grow for the foreseable future.
